About Me

Tim Grady, Licensed Mental Health Counselor

I'm humbled over and over again by the privilege I have to witness and share in my clients' lives each and every day.  I do not take that responsibility lightly, and I am pleased to be of service.

I believe that mental health all starts with a belief that each of us can, and deserves to, become the best version of ourselves.  I won't pretend to know what that version of you is, but I will support you as we find out.

I have had the honor of working with many diverse communities in my professional life, including: LGBTQ+ people, the Transgender/Gender Non-conforming community, survivors of sexual exploitation and trafficking, people living with HIV, communities of color, and people in recovery from drugs and alcohol.

Note to Transgender Clients

I am committed to supporting transgender and non-binary people on their journey of gender affirmation.  I identify as a strong ally to this community, and personally identify as cisgender and gay.

HIstorically, mental health providers have played a "gate keeping" role in the lives of transgender clients.  Accessing gender affirming services, including hormone therapy and surgery, still requires at least one referral letter from a qualified mental health provider.  Gate keeping is harmful and does not support the mental or physical health of individuals.  As a medial professional, I also bear some liability for the health and well-being of clients whom I refer for additional services.  I adhere to the WPATH SOC v. 7 in my referral process and role as a mental health provider.

Many transgender and non-binary people resent the imposition of this process, and see it as adding unnecessary "hoops to jump through".  I strongly support this position and offer the following recommendations:

  • Participating in an assessment interview with me, for the expressed purpose of receiving a letter of referral does not in any way come with the expectation that you will participate in or need mental health treatment.

  • My preference is to meet with an individual twice in order to write a thorough letter that is most likely to be accepted by insurance companies who are covering your medical treatment.

  • Those who do not wish to utilize their insurance for this assessment process, or those for whom financial resources are limited, are encouraged to share this information. We will work together to find alternative arrangements to support access to services.
